All custom ocular prosthesis must begin with an impression of the ocular socket, whether it is an initial fitting or a replacement. Examinations and polishing and cleaning of the prosthesis every 6 months are recommended so as to prevent problems that can arise from neglect.

- Inflammation of the conjunctiva with excessive redness.
Replacement
These factors are tell-tale signs that your prosthesis is in need of service or replacement.

One important fact to remember is that both eyes are sympathetic to each other and an infected orbital socket can affect the remaining natural eye.
